Many people live in the most beautiful places in the world, yet are so caught up in the day-to-day grind that they live their lives with blinkers on. You do not want to be one of these people. Big cities have so much to see and explore, it’s a shame how few natives have done what tourists want to do when they arrive. Often times the same applies for smaller cities, too. Here’s a few tips on getting out and exploring a city.
Explore your city’s history
By definition, every place has a history. And, thankfully, people have valued record keeping for long enough that you can find heritage information on your home. Go to your town hall and plan a tour according to landmarks – where settlers first set up shop, what nationality or ethnicity the initial group was and so on. How governance in the city was formed. Why a certain street has the name it has and so on. It makes for good exploration and quasi-historianism, and is a smart way to explore a city.
Museums, please!
Seeing your city requires having your eyes open. Moreover, being a humanbeing requires understanding what makes us who we are. Museums in this respect are easily the most important buildings in the world. From art museums, to Holocaust museums, from car museums to Madame Tussauds wax museum – humanity breathes eternally in these places.
Explore
People spend long portions of their days indoors. The little bit of time we spend outdoors we spend either rushing off somewhere or with blinkers on such that we miss what. If you want to explore a city, take some time out, get a handheld GPS and see where the road takes you. You may be pleasantly surprised by what’s been under your nose, both natural, and man-made.
