Fun things to do on Valentine’s Day

Well, it is almost that time of the year again. Yes, Valentine’s Day is once again upon us. For some of us, it is a wonderful opportunity to show our partner how much he or she means to us. For others, it is simply one day in a year filled with gift-giving occasions in a constant effort to show our love and affection to our other half. Still, for others, it is a dreaded 24 hours spent trying to avoid any and all references to naked, arrow-brandishing cherubs while wishing that we were part of this special club known as coupledom.

For those who are unencumbered

If you are spending Valentine’s Day with your better half, whether he or she is far away or you have yet to meet them, there is no reason to spend the day in hiding.

If the idea of a night in, pampering yourself isn’t up your alley, you can always organise a day or night out with your closest single friends. You could book a table at one of the best restaurants in your city and splurge on excellent food and wonderful wines.

You are not the only one feeling lonely and you might consider volunteering at a local charity for the day. You can do this alone or with friends but you can be sure that your presence and help will be greatly appreciated.

Two is company

You and your partner could re-enact your first date down to the last detail and re-live those (hopefully) wonderful memories that brought you two together.

You could also put together a mouth-watering menu that combines foods that you both enjoy and shop for the ingredients at your local organic market. Once at home, bring your culinary ideas to life together over a bottle of your favourite wine. Wine is great to cook with and even better when added to some dishes.

Another fun idea is to pretend you are tourists in your own town. Book a room at an expensive hotel and enjoy all the luxuries on offer, such as a double full body massage for him and her. Alternatively, you may be real-life tourists by organising a longer stay out of town. Be adventurous and try something new such as skiing, bungee-jumping or scuba diving.

What not to do on Valentine’s Day

Yes, there are things that are bound to turn your wonderful, perfect day into a nightmare. Things like offering a ring box to your girlfriend if you don’t intend to propose. A promise ring or any such ‘gift’ is a huge letdown on Valentine’s Day. If you’re pulling out one of those boxes out of your pocket, be sure you like it and want to put a ring on it!

Roses are red, violets are blue but it’s no reason to be unoriginal. Find out what flowers your partner really likes and show how much you do care.

If you plan on a dinner date, please make sure to book a table and not simply show up at the restaurant hoping that there’ll be a table available.

There are so many things to do on Valentine’s Day as well as any other day of the year to show your love. If you both like art, visit a local museum or gallery. Or enjoy an afternoon go-kart racing or hiking. Ultimately, it is about what you and loved one care about and enjoy. Don’t be a sheep and plan your day based on a Hallmark card you saw in a shop. Be creative and dare to be a little foolish.
