The weather these days has probably given you itchy feet. You’re dying to hotfoot it out of here and find a pleasant spot with less inclement weather. You’ve done your research, mostly online. You’ve booked your tickets. You’ve taken time off from work and bid adieu to your boss and co-workers. Your plants are watered and the pets are taken care of. You’ve arranged for a friend to look over your place regularly. Now comes the fun part: it’s packing time!
What not to pack
Before you decide what to pack, think about what not to pack. Things to leave out of your suitcase are your toiletries, medication, money and traveller’s cheques, jewellery, travel documents, keys and other valuable items. It’s best that you keep these in a carry-on bag, within easy reach.
It’s an art
Packing a suitcase is in fact an art and requires you to master certain techniques and tricks. And practice makes perfect, so you now have a reason to travel more.
Like with any masterpiece, you should evaluate and plan in advance. How long are you going away? Where are you going and what activities will you take part in? Depending on your budget, can you purchase certain items at your destination? It might be something that your mum did for you before your childhood scout and girl guide summer trips, but making a list really does help.
The ‘roll technique’ is a great space saver. Lay two or three items of clothing on top of each other and roll them up. To prevent wrinkles, you can place a sheet of tissue paper in between each item. Also, stuffing your socks in your shoes and lining the latter on the sides of your suitcase is a good idea.
A great hint regarding toiletries is to place them in airtight plastic containers. This will prevent leaks and it is also in line with most current airline travel regulations. Place these on top of everything else in your suitcase, for easy access when going through customs.
Travel light
There are many items that you will be able to find wherever you travel. In addition, travelling light means that you can bring more things back with you.
If you follow some of the advice above, packing for a trip will no longer be a schlepp and you’ll never set foot out the door wondering whether you’ve forgotten something important.
