Who does not love to travel? In today’s global village, it has become much easier for more people to travel and explore countries which had previously seemed unreachable. But as any explorer worth his salt knows, before venturing into unknown territory, it is advisable to plan carefully and take some precautions. There are many wonderful and extraordinary people and places waiting for you on your journey. But there are also dangers that will catch you unaware, if you’re not prepared.
Before you leave
It is best to plan your itinerary. This is not written in stone and will function as a guide while you’re on the road. Flexibility will allow you to enjoy an unforgettable experience. Spontaneity will sometimes take you down the path less travelled and you’re bound to uncover some hidden gems.
Another very good idea is to find out where your embassy or consulate is located, in the country you plan to visit. Write down those details and keep them with a copy of your passport on yourself at all times.
You should also find out what the local customs and laws are, so you don’t get into unnecessary trouble or offend the locals with unacceptable behaviour. Speak to someone who has already travelled to your destinations. Read blogs, books and watch DVDs. It will make your trip much more enjoyable and you’ll get to know the country as the locals know it, not simply as a tourist.
When you’ve arrived
So now that you’re here, how do you stay safe?
Common sense is the key. You should take the same precautions abroad as you do at home. Don’t walk alone in unfamiliar areas at night. Don’t flash your valuables. Fake it till you got it; don’t look lost!
And most of all, enjoy every moment!
