Packing a suitcase to the brim and setting off on a holiday is one activity that fills most of us with joy; but do thoughts of travelling to Paris, Disneyland or other popular tourist destinations do little to excite you? Do you get that ‘been there, done that and got the t-shirt’ feeling? Have a read to find out some strange and exciting travel destinations that you probably never even knew existed.

Exciting Europe

You may have travelled through Europe and tasted wine at every farm but I bet you’ve never slept in the wine cask. At the Hotel de Vrouwe van Stavoren in the Netherlands it is possible to stay in an original Swiss wine cask built to hold 14,500 litres of wine.

If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea (or glass of wine), then travel to Sweden’s Ice Hotel on the banks of the Thorne River. This destination is made completely from ice and snow and is reconstructed every year by different artists to guarantee that no stay will ever be the same. If sleeping on ice is not for you then just pop in for a drink at the ice bar and a chance to see the northern lights.

A little further away

If travel is something you really want and Europe is simply not far enough away from home then here are some strange destinations for you. Try spending a night at the Jules’ Underwater Lodge in Florida, USA; formerly a research lab, the name speaks for itself and it is the only destination of its type in the world. You can also take a visit to the Huacachina oasis town in Peru. Situated around a real oasis in the middle of the desert, it is a truly unique destination.

So ‘pack up your troubles in your old kit bag’, or buy a brand new suitcase and set off on an adventure you will never forget.
