Tell-tale signs you aren’t sleeping enough

Next to eating well, sleeping well is essential for your body’s functioning. However, even if you think you sleep the right number of hours, your sleep may be so interrupted and so fitful that you don’t get the full benefit of a good night’s rest. If you suffer from bags under your eyes and find yourself battling lethargy, you may not be getting as good a night’s sleep as you think you are.

The evidence is in the eyes

The eyes are the most tell-tale part of the body when it comes to lack of sleep. If your eyes are often red in the mornings for extended periods, or if you have bags under your eyes, even if you sleep what should be sufficient hours, then you’re almost certainly not sleeping enough. If, as a woman, you’re finding you spend more time applying make-up than you used to, then that is almost a sure sign that you aren’t sleeping enough.

Lethargy is the enemy

If you often feel lethargic and fatigued throughout the day, it’s likely you aren’t getting enough rest. Fatigue is evidence that your body isn’t getting enough time to recover from the strenuous activity you put it through throughout the day, and since sleep is that period of rest, we can deduce what the source is.

What to do

We’ve covered sleep therapy and how to sleep better in various posts lately, but the shorthand answer on what to do when you have lack of sleep is to figure out what’s causing you to sleep so poorly. That may sound straightforward, but it could be any number of things, from poor health, to too much stress, and even an uncomfortable, rundown bed.

For radical sleep transformation, we recommend you alter your diet, spend money on a brand new mattress with immediacy – maybe relook your pillows, too – and to take a holiday, if possible. Cut off from all work-related tasks, and go easy for a few weeks. If after the de-stressing and new mattress you find you still wake up feeling fatigued, you may need to go in for some sleep therapy.
