Just about everyone, young and old, loves Alice in Wonderland. Whether you’re inspired by the book or the recent 3D film starring Johnny Depp, Lewis Carroll’s classic tale of imagination and adventure is filled with fascinating characters. Anyone whose ever been invited to a Halloween party and has no idea what to wear, should consider dressing up as their favourite character from the story and there’s no limit to the fancy dress costumes to choose from.
Alice
Dressing up as Alice isn’t only for little girls, she was 19 when she returned to Wonderland in the film, after all. To look like Alice, buy or hire a long blonde wig, and try charity shops for a knee-length light blue dress. Ideally, it should have short ruffled sleeves, and a ruffled skirt. You can make the make the skirt yourself quite easily, and simply wear it underneath the dress. Then finish off the outfit with a pair of low-heeled Mary Janes and some white school socks.

The Mad Hatter is a great character for both men and women. What you’ll need is an oversized top hat (you’ll be able to get hold of one from a costume hire shop), an index card that has 10/6 written on it tucked into the band of the hat, a checked pair of trousers and a brightly coloured jacket. There are no fashion rules when it comes to this outfit. You’re looking for clashing colours and prints. Black dress shoes, and a set of fake teeth with a false overbite will complete this Halloween costume.
The White Rabbit
Dressing up like the White Rabbit will also work just as well for men as it will for women. You’ll need a white shirt and a brightly coloured waistcoat (Disney dressed this character in red when they made the animated Alice in Wonderland in 1951), and a bow-tie. Get hold of a pair of bunny ears, too, and don’t forget to accessorise with a pocket watch.
Since the 3D film, people have gone Alice mad, so you won’t have a problem picking up any of these Halloween costumes at a fancy dress shop. If you’re the creative type, though, they’re quite easy to put together yourself.
