‘Feng shui’ means wind and water, and it’s an ancient Chinese art that focuses on balancing energy to increase happiness, health and wealth. While there’s no scientific proof that feng shui really works, many people swear by it. There’s no better way to find out for yourself whether there’s anything to it than by trying it out with these practical tips for transforming your home office into a hub of productivity and, quite possibly, abundance.
Tip 1: Separate your business and home life
You don’t want your work to bleed into your family time any more than you want your home life to interfere with your work. This feng shui tip is super practical, and we’d advise anyone with a home office to think seriously about where they work. The best option, as far as feng shui is concerned, would be to have an office with a separate entrance. If that’s not possible, make sure your office is as far from your bedroom as possible. In feng shui, the bedroom represents the inner self, and is a space for rest and reflection – so keep your laptop in the office, where it belongs.
Tip 2: Consider air and light
Another feng shui tip that just makes sense is to pay close attention to the quality of air and light in your home office. You won’t be happy working in a dingy, stuffy office. And if you’re unhappy, you’re less likely to be productive. If you don’t have a good source of natural light in your office, invest in a good lamp. And if you don’t have a window nearby for fresh air, consider plants, which will naturally purify your air and help your brain get all the oxygen it needs to do a good job.
Tip 3: Declutter
Feng shui practitioners believe that clutter drains energy, and we agree. It’s hard to be focused and productive in a cluttered, disorganised space. So mark a weekly – or even daily – time for decluttering on your calendar, and stick to it. Use files, an in-tray and shelving to keep papers out of the way, have drawers dedicated to items you use often, and declutter your desktop while you’re at it, too.
