A night without restful sleep has many knock-on effects. Bags under the eyes have never looked sexy, the crankiness that accompanies a lack of sleep is unbecoming, and it doesn’t do your health or digestive system much good either. The occasional sleepless night is okay, but if it’s a regular occurrence, then you certainly have a problem on your hands. Here are some tips on curing fitful sleep.

Tip 1: Regulate your sleep

If you make sure to go to sleep at the same time every night, your body ‘learns’ when it is time to switch off. This is one of the easiest cures for fitful sleep, since through routine, you will regulate your internal cycle and sleep should come naturally.

Tip 2: Sleep somewhere else as investigation

If you have a home with multiple bedrooms, or can crash at a friend or your partner’s, do so repeatedly. If you’re finding you’re falling asleep with greater ease in other beds, than it could very well be the discomfort your bed is causing you that stops you from getting the night’s rest you need. Ship it out. Buy a new mattress, at the very least, and check the results.

Tip 3: Do not drink or eat right before bed

Eating or drinking anything other than water before you sleep is a bad idea. Caffeinated drinks like coffee give you a buzz that keeps you awake, which is the opposite of what you’re trying to do. Do right by your body if you want restful sleep, by not drinking or eating any liquids at least an hour – or two – before nap time.

Tip 4: Read good fiction before bed

Reading a book in bed before you pass out is an amazing cure for fitful sleep. People know that very good literature is pure sleep magic for the mind.

Tip 5: See a professional

If after having tried the four tips above to get more restful sleep, and you’ve found none work, see a professional. Outside of insomnia, fitful sleep is a sign that something is amiss and you need to address it. It could be stress or a number of other things, but whatever it is, it cannot be ignored.
