Perhaps the ultimate dream for a Beatles fan is to have a piece of the band’s memorabilia – even if it is a little odd, like having John Lennon’s toilet in your bathroom. The porcelain toilet was used by Lennon between 1969 and 1972 in his Berkshire home, and was stored in the garden shed of a builder for the past forty years.
Beatle Week Festival
The porcelain potty was sold on auction at Liverpool’s 33rd annual Beatle Week Festival. Also for sale were a black and white picture of the singer outside his family home, a harmonica once owned by Julian Lennon, and a rare copy of the 1968 recording ‘Two Virgins’. Recorded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, the record comes in a sleeve that features full frontal nudity on the front and back covers – it had to be sold in a brown paper wrapper when first released, and could only be purchased by order from the record label.
Money down the toilet?
Organiser Stephen Bailey said that ‘The toilet might be worth something, and it might not, but it is certainly one of the more unusual items we’ve sold.’ As it turned out, it was worth something – the loo was expected to collect around £1,000, but bids surpassed all expectations to reach a £9,500 selling price. After the auction, Bailey said ‘I don’t think I’d be personally using it in the future if I’d paid 9,500 pounds for it.’
Ornate
The white and blue porcelain toilet was described as ‘ornate’ and ‘really nice looking’. If you’re looking to add something new to your bathroom but plan to do it a little more simply and a little less expensively, look here for some appealing options.
