Iced teas are the perfect summer drink, but the iced tea you buy ready made in a bottle may come with some ingredients you’d be better off not putting in your body. Preservatives, colourants and artificial flavourants really detract from the health benefits of iced teas, which are full of antioxidant power and flavour. The solution: make your own iced tea. Take a look at these super healthy, healing iced tea recipes from Care2.com.
Acai berry antioxidant booster
Acai berry is a fantastic source of antioxidants that prevent ageing and disease. Take four acai berry tea bags and allow them to steep in five cups of boiling water for ten minutes. Add 20 drops of stevia (a naturally sweet herb) and the juice of one lemon. Transfer into a jug and add plenty of ice.
Almond milk iced chai
Iced teas don’t have to be light and fruit-based. This nourishing almond milk iced tea is almost as good as a meal, and it’s suitable for the lactose-intolerant. Almond milk is rich in calcium and magnesium, while the cinnamon in this iced tea is great for stabilising blood sugar. Mix half a cup of chai concentrate with a cup of almond milk, some freshly ground nutmeg and four ice cubes. Pour into a large glass (this recipe serves one) and sprinkle with a light dusting of cinnamon before serving.
Green tea lemonade
Green tea is simply good for you. It’s one of the richest sources of antioxidants, and has been found to be very good at burning fat around the belly. Plus, fresh lemon juice contains over 20 phytonutrients (plant nutrients) that have anti-cancer properties. Mix together a quarter of a teaspoon of green tea powder (available at your health shop) with the juice of a lemon, six drops of liquid stevia and two cups of water in your blender. Put ice in glasses, pour over the lemonade, and serve.
