There are few things more frustrating than being unable to get to sleep at night. If insomnia is making your life a nightmare and it’s not because of a related disorder like depression, you may have missed out on one of the simple solutions to the common causes of restlessness. Find out about the simplest ways to get a better night’s rest, then sleep easier.

Cut it out

First, try eliminating the stimulants that might be keeping you awake. That means coffee, tea, and too much refined sugar, for at least a few hours before you get into bed. Dealing with insomnia also means eliminating TV from the hours before you go to bed – and from the bedroom.

Routine

If you’re simply working or watching TV until you’re exhausted, then going to bed, it’s likely that your brain has trouble getting into the relaxed state that allows you to sleep. Establish a regular time for going to bed, and a routine leading up to it. The routine can include simple bedtime tasks like brushing your teeth, as well as relaxing activities like taking a hot bath or drinking herbal tea. If you lie awake and worry about the day ahead, try writing down a list of tasks to accomplish right before you go to bed – knowing what’s ahead might help to put them out of your mind.

Room to sleep

Make sure that your room is peaceful place to sleep in. Don’t work in your bedroom, particularly on the bed itself, and try reading something you enjoy and listening to soothing music last thing at night. Lastly, make sure that your room is completely quiet and dark for complete relaxation and a refreshing rest. With a few changes to your sleeping habits you should soon be able to say goodnight and goodbye to problems with your sleep.
