The traditional top loader washing machine has been a family favourite for years, and for good reason. They’re faster than front loaders, and are easy to load and empty. They are quite heavy on electricity, though, and in the long run, may damage your clothes somewhat. They’re also quite pricey, compared with front loaders. Here we look at the pros and cons of top loaders, to help you decide whether they’re really for you.

Traditional top loaders vs. HE top loaders

The traditional top loading washing machine is your cheapest bet if you’re looking for a budget top loader. They guzzle energy and are quite rough on clothes, though, so if you’re looking for a gentler, more environmentally friendly top loader, look into HE top loaders.

HE top loader washers load from the top like their predecessors, but use less water, have higher spin speeds, and are more energy efficient. They also clean clothes better, but because of this they need a specialised detergent.

Top loaders: the pros

There are quite a few good reasons for buying a top loader washer, and we’ve listed them below.

  • Speed: Top loading machines have faster cycles, so they’re a great option for busy mums.
  • Ease of use: With a top loader, you won’t have to bend over to get your washed clothes. This makes top loader washers a good option for older people, or those with back problems.
  • Last minute laundry: If you often find a pair of socks or a T-shirt at the last minute and need to add it to your load once you’ve started washing, a top loader is for you. Once a front loader has started its cycle, its door is sealed, making last minute additions to your load impossible.
  • Detergents: While a special kind of detergent is recommended for HE machines, a top loader can, in general, take any kind of washing powder.

Top loaders: the cons

  • Efficiency: Traditionally, top loaders are less energy efficient than front loaders, and also use more water. Always check their Energy Star rating, and aim for an A.
  • Space: You need space for a top loading machine – it won’t fit under a counter top. If space is a consideration, a top loader is not for you.
  • Damage to clothes: Top loaders wash more aggressively than front loaders, so your clothing’s life span may be a little shortened by this kind of machine.

Ultimately, the decision of what kind of machine you should get to suit your family’s needs is up to you. Considering the pros and cons of both front loaders and top loaders will take you a long way towards making the right choice.
