Great food for a picnic

Summer is a great time to pack in blankets and picnic supplies for a day out with friends and family. Pick a perfect picnic spot and remember the sunscreen, then take some time to decide on what food you’ll take along, and you have a recipe for success. What kind of food works for a picnic? It should be simple, not too messy, and of course, delicious.

Simple sandwiches

Sandwiches are a food that everyone enjoys, and they’re the ideal container for all of the foods that are a little complicated for picnics: save on the amount of cutlery that you have to take along by piling salads and cold meats onto tasty sandwiches instead of eating them straight off of plates. Get creative and try using different kinds of bread: bagels, wraps, and pitas are interesting variations.

Cheesy but fun

Take your favourite type of cheese and a few biscuits along on your picnic for a snack that’s deliciously savoury. Soft cheeses work best – they’re easily spreadable, so they’re easy to handle on a picnic.

Sweet nothings

Bake something tasty, pack in some biscuits and a flask of coffee, or mash up some meringues, cream, and strawberries to end off your picnic on a sweet note.

Leftovers aren’t left out

Don’t be afraid to take the easy route to a great picnic: leftover pizza and pasta make delicious picnic food, and pies or quiches made in advance are just as delicious as fresh ones. You can also go the pre-made route with food from the shops – it’s less mess and fuss, and it’s easy to get rid of the packaging afterwards. Remember, whatever option you choose, to recycle and keep your picnic area tidy for other outdoor adventures to come.
