If you’re a fondue fan looking to host a party with a difference, why not have a raclette party? Raclette is a Swiss cheese usually made with potatoes on a raclette grill made just for the purpose. The grill heats a few small pans which melt the cheese, and guests can enjoy the melted cheese with their own favourite foods. While raclette is traditionally a wintertime meal, grilling fresh summer produce is a great way to get your friends together for some DIY cooking.
Something cheesy
The traditional cheese to use in a raclette is, of course, raclette. But you can be experimental and try different cheeses for your raclette party. Emmentaler, grey alp cheese, French raclette and appenzaller will all work. You’re looking for a cheese that will melt well, so that you can scrape it off and use it to top whatever it is you have grilled on your rack.

For a great summer raclette party, try sliced courgette, green peppers, mushrooms or aubergine. If you’re using a more solid vegetable, like the potato that forms part of the traditional raclette, be sure to blanch it first so that it cooks through. Fish and seafood also work wonderfully on a raclette, but remember that fish is easy to overcook, so adjust the temperature if necessary. Serve pickled onions, gherkins, and your favourite condiments with the meal. For some ideas, look online.
Raclette breakfast
Fancy a champagne breakfast with some of your nearest and dearest? Try hosting a raclette party in the morning. Prepare omelettes or English muffins, melt the cheese of your choice, and have your guests tuck in. End the meal with slices of fresh summer fruit.
Hosting a raclette party is a no-fuss way to entertain, getting your guests involved in the cooking process. And raclettes aren’t only for winter. What better way to enjoy healthy summer vegetables prepared over a grill?
