If you’re feeling as wound up as a coiled spring, we’ve got six almost instant relaxers to reduce the tension you’re feeling. You could try a quick facial massage, some exercise, visualisation, deep breathing, self massage or chanting. These simple techniques can bring deep relaxation which can re-boost your physical and mental energy levels. Choose whatever feels appropriate at the time, for example facial exercises and chanting are best done with the door closed, or even in a lift if you get a chance.

Facial exercises

For an instant relaxer, yawn as deeply as possible, allowing your jaw to drop down towards your neck. Don’t feel embarrassed about faking it because it’s the movement that counts. If you have the time, stick out your tongue as far as you can, while opening your eyes as wide as you can. Relax and repeat.

Visualise

Close your eyes while sitting in a comfortable position. Take in a deep breath through your nostrils and then picture a tranquil water or garden scene — or anything else that may help you to relax your mind for a few minutes. If other thoughts enter your mind, re-focus on your breath.

Deep breathing

Deep breathing is an almost instant relaxer. Take a minute to breathe slowly and deeply to restore your serenity. Adopt an upright posture as you do so and breathe in the fresh air from an open window if possible.

Chanting

If you’ve got a couple of minutes to yourself, try chanting slowly and deeply for a minute or so. Use a low voice and possibly choose a word (or several words) that makes you feel calmer.

Self-massage

Self-massage will require a few extra minutes but will reduce muscle ache and a build up of tension. Massage your neck, shoulders, scalp and your face. Massage the area around your temples and your eyes.

Exercise or stretch

If you’ve got excess adrenaline running through your blood, a quick burst of exercise will help calm you down again. A slow long body stretch or neck and shoulder exercises will help reduce muscles tension.
