When it comes to commuter travelling, there are bound to be frustrations and the possibility of delays. The best thing to do when faced with these inevitabilities is to accept the situation, rather than allow yourself to get anxious or angry. Deep breathing will help to lower your blood pressure, while reading or listening to music will help you make the most of the time. Read on for some tips to reduce the negative aspects of commuter travelling.

Travelling by car

To improve your journey all round, it’s important to have your car serviced on a regular basis. Also, have it cleaned often and make sure that your interior is not cluttered. Have your air-conditioning serviced too so that you’re not stuck in a boiling hot car in summer. Keep yourself energised by keeping the temperature slightly cool all year round.

Play stimulating music when you’re driving along long, boring motorways but choose relaxing music if you’re stuck in traffic jams. When choosing a car, make sure that it’s easy to drive. Having a car that you enjoy driving can help minimise the less than positive experiences of driving to and from work everyday.

Travelling by public transport

Commuter travelling may mean that there’s no available seat, so you might have to stand for the entire journey. If this is the case, try to find a spot that allows you to rest your back against a wall. It will help all the more if you are able to position yourself so that you can look out of the window while you’re travelling. Move your feet and legs around every now and then to keep your circulation going.

If you’re lucky enough to find a seat, be sure to sit with a strong back. Try to get a spot near a window that allows you to face the direction you’re travelling in. Read a book or catch up on your journal-writing. Otherwise, learn to meditate and use this time to still your mind and relax your body before or after your day at the office.
