Uninspired by Austria, France and Switzerland? When you think of ski holidays do you think, ‘been there, done that’? If you’re one of the lucky ones who has had the opportunity to explore the world’s top ski resorts or you’re just looking for somewhere unique to spend your winter holidays, then try out some unusual skiing destinations like Dubai and Lesotho.
Ski when there isn’t snow
Tired of rocky terrain or the stress of watching weather reports? Timberline Lodge in Colorado boasts open ski runs all year round and in this one-of-a-kind resort you can relax by the pool in the morning and hit the slopes in the afternoon. Alternatively, head town to the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai where you can ski, or shop, to your heart’s content before stepping back out into the sweltering desert that is Dubai.
Asia
Asia is not a place often thought of when planning ski holidays but it boasts some of the best ski resorts in the world. Ski in South Korea while gazing out at the sea or visit the Hanazono resort in Japan for spectacular night skiing. China and Mongolia also offer some world class ski resorts and a trip to either of these countries is best accompanied by a few days’ sightseeing in the big cities. If it is powder you’re after visit the Gulmarg ski resort in the Himalayas – it boasts the world’s highest gondola and the snowfall is like no place on earth.
The southern hemisphere
If you just can’t get enough of skiing in winter then use your summer holiday to ski too! Ushuaia in South America is known as the ‘end of the world’ as it is the southernmost city and so gets great snow. You could also visit AfriSki in Lesotho, a small country within the boundaries of South Africa. Note that while skiing in Africa is an experience in itself, there is only one slope so experienced skiers can become bored quickly. Alternatively, visit the beautiful island of Tasmania and spend some time at the exquisite Ben Lomond resort.
