Green appliances get smart

In January it was reported that the UK state can now visit homes to check whether appliances comply with green standards. If you haven’t been concerned with greening your home up until now, this would be a good idea to consider green appliances as alternatives to outdated energy guzzlers, and save some money in the long run while you’re at it.

Star-rated products

The European Union has adopted a star rating for most white goods. This takes into account a number of factors, including consumption, noise, and the materials an appliance is made from. A product that is coded A or A++ has the highest level of efficiency, and is what you should look for when choosing green appliances.

Funky green fridges

Gorenje has a great range of funky, eco-friendly fridges. The RB62860 model is not only trendy and good looking, but it also has an A+ star rating and a capacity of 271 litres, making it an ideal family fridge.

The gas tumble dryer

Gas dryers work exactly the same way as electric dryers, except for their energy source, making them ideal green appliances. Leading manufacturer and pioneer in Europe, White Knight, claims that their tests show that gas dryers produce 50% less carbon than your average electric dryer, and are 60% cheaper to run. White Knight’s White Knight ECO83A runs at an estimated £38 a year, and isn’t too pricey, either.

Eco-smart PCs

Dell has a broader range of environmental policies than any other PC manufacturer, and can boast full compliance with the EU’s initiatives in restricting hazardous waste. They claim to produce the world’s greenest PCs, and this might be true, right down to using (recyclable) bamboo to package their products. The Dell Studio Hybrid is a scaled down approach to the PC, and also uses less electricity.

As the world gears up to go green, gadgets and household appliances are getting smarter, and sometimes funkier. The trend now is towards conservation, and buying into it makes sense for you, and the environment.
