Five simple steps to a greener lifestyle

Would you like to live a greener lifestyle but don’t know where to start? Going green is a process that can begin with taking just a few small steps. You don’t have to worry about making sure all the glass you’re using is recycled or the cotton you buy is organic. Start by making a few easy changes in your lifestyle and take it from there. You’ll find your new green habits will become routine before you know it.

Plates

If you use disposable plates and cups when you’re having a barbecue or a party, stop. If you worry about glasses and plates breaking at a party, use durable plastic plates rather than disposable ones.

Storing food

Don’t store your food in cheap, reusable plastic containers that wear out quickly. Rather use glass containers that are microwave- and oven-safe or, if you must use plastic, make sure it’s BPA-free. BPA disrupts hormones in the body and has been linked with cancer.

Laundry day

A full load of washing saves water and power. Try having a washing basket for each colour (darks, whites and mixed colours) and do washing only when the baskets are full. Wash your clothes on a warm or cool cycle to save more energy and always use cold water when clothes are rinsing.

Cleaning

Rather than using disposable wipes and other cleaning products that can be used just a few times stick to the basics: all you need is a bucket, a mop and some cloths. If you can avoid using sponges, do, as they wear out quite quickly.

In the shower

Shower rather than taking a bath and keep your showers as short as possible. If you install a low-flow showerhead you’ll save more energy and water. Also consider an aerating showerhead, which reduces the amount of water needed by mixing air in with the water.
