What your body language is saying to others

As much as we try we will never be able to read the minds of others, but we can do the next best thing by reading what their body movements give away. More importantly, what do our body movements indicate to others? Your body is a window for others to see who you are. It reflects what you eat, what ailments you suffer from, the past experiences you have had and, sometimes, it can reflect what you are feeling inside.

Pleased to meet you

The way we greet others says a lot about how we are feeling at the time. A person who gives you a firm handshake exhibits confidence and power as opposed to a person who gives a tense and nervous handshake, showing signs of shyness and nervousness. A wilted handshake gives the same impression. You should work on the perfect handshake so that you convey a good first impression. Smile while you shake hands with a person, but not for too long, as someone may consider you gullible or not that bright. Make eye contact with the other person for roughly three seconds. Do not stare.

How you can respond to others

When you are having a conversation with someone, widening your eyes indicates that you are interested in what they have been telling you and is a positive response to a good story. When you tap your feet or shake a limb profusely, you are sending negative signals of boredom. The person you are talking to may think you want to exit the conversation. The tone of your voice is also important. Make sure you speak clearly without shouting. If you happen to be in an argument, it is best to not match the pessimistic and angry tone of the other person and you will actually be more persuasive if you keep your voice level and steady.

Practice in the mirror and control what your body tells others. This will benefit your interaction with others especially in the workplace and will also make you feel more confident and in control.
