If you often find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, don’t feel alone. Many people are in the same boat and most are probably as anxious as you. The real dangers of not getting enough sleep

Grumpy, groggy and lethargic. That’s likely how you feel when you’re not getting enough sleep. Plus, you’ll probably find you can’t concentrate as well as you should be able to and you may even suffer from muscle pain. These side-effects of lack of sleep are unpleasant, but not really dangerous. However, new research has linked insomnia with some serious diseases, including diabetes, colon cancer and heart disease. This should make you think twice about burning the candle at both ends. Your body was designed to rest every night, and if you’re depriving it of that rest you may be putting your health at risk. Can’t sleep? You’re not alone

Last month, a man having his sleeping habits examined in a Swedish research facility allowed himself to be filmed while sleeping – or attempting to. In an effort to raise awareness about insomnia, the footage was made available live online for insomniacs and anyone else interested to see. The standard procedure forms part of the process of determining whether a patient has a sleep disorder that needs treatment. Foods that help you sleep

What you eat has a lot to do with how well you sleep. Insomnia can be caused by stress, anxiety, medication, depression, and a range of other complaints, both physical and psychological. But if all’s well in your world and you still can’t sleep, you may want to consider your diet. Sleeplessness could be caused by something you’re eating or drinking, or something you should, that you’re not.
