The Plant Programme
- Photo: MinimalistPhotography101 / Flickr
In her book, The Plant Programme, Professor Jane Plant explains that a dairy-free diet is beneficial to one’s health. She recommends that besides eliminating all dairy, one should also cut down on the amount of meat one eats – so that it only consists of ten per cent of your daily intake. If you are going to eat meat, it should be thoroughly cooked organic meat. Protein should preferably come from pulses, cereals and soya based food. Read on for more Plant Programme principles. ‘A roast chicken dinner is one of life’s great treats, and it’s something my family and I enjoy every single week, summer or winter. Chicken is one of our most versatile meats, its uses stretching from salads to stir-fries and curries to casseroles. It’s also a fantastic vehicle for carrying flavours,’ says Nick Nairn in his book Nick Nairn Cook School. If you’re keen on chicken, it’s often difficult to beat succulent chicken dishes like roast chicken and roast potatoes. (more…)

Learning to cook – buying game
- Photo: Another Pint Please… / Flickr
Game is organic meat, period – and when wild game has been responsibly managed, there is a need for culling so as to avoid over-population and the ensuing environmental damage. Every animal, whether deer, rabbit or game bird has led a free and natural life. Farmed game is a good alternative to wild game as it still brings great flavour to the table, albeit less intense. It is also less expensive than wild game, although its quality will depend on how it was farmed. (more…)

Reasons to eat organic
- Photo: HoskingIndustries / Flickr
The organic food revolution has come about far slower than advocates of organic eating would have liked. This is so for two primary reasons: firstly, organic food is more expensive than inorganic food, and secondly, it’s more tedious to track down, given it often requires we shop from specialised stores and individual farmers. But even with these challenges, there are still many reasons why you should go out of your way to eat organic. Below are three such reasons. (more…)

Do you understand food labeling?
- Photo: marcospozo / Flickr
If you’ve ever felt confused by the food labels you see in supermarkets, you’re not alone. A recent survey shows that many consumers find terms like ‘natural’, ‘fresh’, and ‘real’ misleading. The claims on the labels go largely unregulated, so who’s to blame shoppers for getting the wrong impression as a result of trusting food producers’ claims? (more…)

Xenoestrogens – unnatural hormones in your environment
- Photo: Stock.Xchng
Hormones: we blame them for a lot of things. Suffering from PMS? It’s your hormones. Your teenage daughter is running wild? It’s her hormones. Your son is suffering from acne? Blame it on the hormones. And many people believe breast cancer is caused by hormones. But while doctors map the complex patterns and effect of hormones in the body, they may not be paying attention to the effect of dangerous synthetic hormones in our environment. (more…)

What does ‘organic’ really mean?
- Photo: Peter Blanchard / Flickr
Fifty years ago the term ‘organic’ referred to anything alive or once living – anything that was not mineral, metallic or synthetic. And even today, many people think ‘organic’ refers to something ‘natural’ as opposed to man made. For them, eating organic means having a potato instead of a chocolate bar. But the word really refers to something far more complex. ‘Organic’ really means ‘organically grown’, which points to a revolution in the way people are producing the food that ends up in your cooker. Organic food: where is your money going?
- Photo: Stock.Xchng
The rising cost of organic food has lead many to wonder whether this highly priced produce is worth the extra cash. The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in 2007, David Milibrand, claimed that it was no healthier than their inorganic alternatives. Organic farmers rebuked this claim and the Soil Association, which promotes organic food, agreed that there is genuine proof that claims that it food is much more beneficial to our health and that of our environment.
