Don’t make these medication mistakes

In 2009 the number of medication errors recorded by the NHS had doubled over two years, the Guardian reported. In 2005 36,335 cases were reported, while 86,085 cases occurred in 2007. A hundred of these cases ended in death. While the NHS has since done its best to improve the situation, mistakes with prescriptions do inevitably happen. Whenever a headache, migraine or period pain crops up, our first response is often to swallow a couple of pills in the hope of a quick release from the sometimes debilitating pain. Unfortunately, this approach to pain management sometimes comes at a price. Side-effects of painkillers may include constipation and drowsiness, and may even be of a cardiovascular and respiratory nature. There are ways to manage pain with the help of natural substances without the unpleasant and harmful results of taking pills and other medication, though. There is the caution that one should never exercise when sick but is this warning actually based in truth? There are many levels of feeling sick, whether you are just plain exhausted, have a stress headache, a terrible hangover, period pains or a snotty nose and the flu. A prescription and a vending machine – all you need to get your medication

In an effort to reduce queuing times, Sainsbury’s stores are considering introducing vending machines that dispense prescription medication. While those in favour of the machines argue that four-fifths of the business at a pharmacy comes from people getting repeats of medication that they’re already using, critics are arguing that dispensing medication with getting a pharmacist involved in the process could have dangerous consequences. New drug could stop diabetes in just six days

A clinical trial is being performed on a new drug called otelixizumab, which could be able to stop diabetes in just six days. If the drug proves to work, it could decrease the amount of insulin the body produces. The drug has shown that it works best when it is given to a patient that has been diagnosed recently with diabetes and in order to work it has to be injected once a day for six days. Otelixizub works by switching off the system in the immune system that causes type 1 diabetes. (more…)
