Kids take the healthy route with Walk to School Week

Levels of childhood obesity in the UK are soaring, and with a lack of exercise largely to blame, making a difference might only involve taking a few steps. That’s just what thousands of children did during Walk to School Week, an initiative that sees school kids in travelling to school on foot rather than in their parents’ cars. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver to invest his own money in school dinners

Chef Jamie Oliver has announced he is planning to spend millions of his own money on a 10-year plan to improve meals in UK primary schools, as well as educate children and parents on healthy eating. Oliver said that, after learning that the UK is the most unhealthy country in Europe, with a generation of kids expected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents, he is determined to improve the situation – even if it means money out of his pocket. In the past, myths about vegetarianism have abounded, vegetarians were thought to be pale and sickly, limited to a diet of bland vegetables and strange grains. But now a new myth is surfacing; the myth of the healthy vegetarian. Studies, including the massive 25-year Oxford Vegetarian Study in the UK, are suggesting vegetarianism may be a good option for the health conscious. The answer to the question of why we’re getting fatter could be a lot simpler: we’re just eating too much. A recent study published in the Journal of Obesity offers further insight into what we’ve long known – that people around the world are eating more and more, out of larger food containers that make the temptation to overeat that much greater.
