Kids take the healthy route with Walk to School Week

Levels of childhood obesity in the UK are soaring, and with a lack of exercise largely to blame, making a difference might only involve taking a few steps. That’s just what thousands of children did during Walk to School Week, an initiative that sees school kids in travelling to school on foot rather than in their parents’ cars. Sunday blues are becoming more frequent

The so-called ‘Sunday Blues’, the gloom one feels the day before one must go back to work, is something that most people just brush off as part of the weekend. New research done by Mind, a mental health charity, has proven that this condition has increased with the recession, where many workers are taking on more work and working overtime without pay to make sure that their job is secured. Outdoor gyms: just five minutes a day will boost your mood

In the face of the credit crunch, gym memberships dropped 23 per cent last year. But The Great Outdoor Gym Company, the UK’s biggest manufacturer of outdoor gym equipment, has set up 104 outdoor gyms across the country since its launch in 2007, and plans to open 150 more this year. The best thing about these gyms: they’re free to use. As an added bonus, studies show that exercising in the outdoors, even for just five minutes a day, has a dramatic effect on mood and self-esteem. The stress of work is causing heart disease in women

Recent research has claimed that women under the age of fifty who have stressful jobs are more likely to get heart disease than their older counterparts. Studies have previously found links between men who have high pressure jobs and heart disease but this is the first time it has been proven in women. The research was published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine and examined the impact that work pressure on had on 12,116 Danish nurses between the ages of 45 and 64 at the start of 1993.
