- Photo: Governor Patrick / Flickr
University courses are getting ever stranger. It’s possible to study subjects like Zombies and David Beckham these days. But then, it would seem that university courses are losing favour on the whole. Statistics show that applications for university courses are down 9 per cent for 2012 compared to 2011. Besides, The Independent reports that over 28,000 of the 2008/09 student intake dropped out of university in the UK. But is dropping out such a bad thing? Three successful ‘drop-outs’ prove not. - Photo: surlygirl / Flickr
One of the first things your child will learn at school is how to read and write. This is a very important step in your little one’s life as it holds the key to being able to retrieve more information and accumulate more knowledge. Many parents often fret over their children’s education at one point or another and taking an active role in the development of your child is very important. How to recognise dyslexia
- Photo: rosswebsdale / Flickr
Dyslexia is the word used to describe a condition where a person has a basic difficulty with words and/or language. Before it is correctly diagnosed, it can be a debilitating condition. People affected, whether children or adults, often feel discouraged, frustrated, less intelligent than their peers and angry. Although far brighter than their reading and/or writing may suggest, dyslexics will display problems with the concepts of direction and sequencing and with spelling and reading short words. They might also begin to talk later than children in their age group and could experience difficulties with developing a legible handwriting as well as learning basic mathematics. (more…)

- Photo: Laura B. Dahl / Flickr
Home education, deschooling or homeschooling as it is known in the United States, is becoming more popular with many parents. In the United Kingdom, it is perfectly legal in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. And contrary to popular belief, you, as a parent, do not require any formal qualifications in order to take full charge of your children’s education. By law, however, it is your responsibility to ensure that your children have access to education, at home or in a public or private school. (more…)

How to help children with career planning
- Photo: Stock.Xchng
The way people are employed and are employable has fundamentally altered in the last two decade, especially in the last 10 years. The old theory of go to school, get good grades, go to college, then grad school and you’re guaranteed a great job doesn’t hold water any more. There’s much more to remaining competitive in the global economy, and parents can have a great deal of influence over how your children tackle the world when they grow up. (more…)

Play an active role in your child’s education
- Photo: Stock.Xchng
As parents, we place a great deal of faith in our children’s teachers. We realise education is one of the most powerful gifts we can give our children, and, therefore want to offer them the very best of it. The problem is parents often think educating children is not an activity they should actively take part in. On the contrary, what children learn at home is as important – if not more so – as what they learn at school. (more…)

The best preventative measure for dementia? More education
- Photo: imago / Flickr
A recent study has shown a surprising possible way to delay the onset of dementia – or at least to prevent its symptoms from making themselves known. The study showed that those who had more education were less likely to have shown signs of dementia during their lifetime – but that they may have been physically affected by dementia nonetheless. Kids’ educational toys – how to ensure your child has fun while learning
- Photo: Stock.Xchng
Toddlers and babies grow and develop everyday, and there are a variety of educational toys on the market to assist them in their development. Toddlers’ minds are like sponges; they soak up everything while developing their construction, social, sensory and speaking skills; and finding ways to enhance those skills will benefit your child in the long run. Studies have even shown that educational learning toys can help increase your child’s IQ during their key initial learning phases, which take place early on in life. (more…)
