Rice: white or brown?

Rice is a staple food for three billion people around the world – and most of them eat white rice. Rice comes in four main varieties: white, brown, long grain and short grain. Brown rice goes through little processing, with just the outer layer removed in milling. It’s high in fibre and has a low GI. White rice is the same thing, but more processed. Londoners are the UK’s healthiest eaters

According to a study that looked at regional eating habits in the UK, Londoners are the healthiest Brits. The north-south divide was very evident in the study, with shoppers in the capital spending 26 per cent more on fresh fruit and vegetables than those in the north. A well known grocery and shopping price comparison website conducted the study, using sales figures from some of the biggest supermarkets to collect their data. (more…)

Eating healthily may well do more for your skin than expensive treatments. New research shows that diet is your most important weapon in the fight to keep skin young. A study of over 4,000 women showed that poor diet and premature ageing are inextricably linked. Women with higher intakes of vitamin C and omega-6 fatty acids who ate fewer carbohydrates and fats were found by researchers to have healthier looking, more youthful skin than their less healthy counterparts. Fructose sugar: overweight and diabetes warning

Fructose sugar is a natural fruit sugar found in many soft drinks and processed foods that has long been blamed for the spread of obesity worldwide. A new study has found that this concern is valid, and that fructose sugar should be avoided whenever possible, as it can lead to fat around the belly (increasing the risk of heart disease) and can cause insulin resistance, in turn a cause of type 2 diabetes.
