Why vegans are in vogue

For the first time ever in 2010 the US Department of Agriculture included vegetarianism in its food pyramid, considered the national standard for healthy eating, and people are taking notice. In February Oprah had her TV show staff eating vegan for a week (some loved it, while others hated it), Bill Clinton claims to be ‘almost vegan’ for the sake of his heart and Martha Stewart is also getting in on the game – she recently cooked a take on boeuf bourguignon using gluten as a meat substitute. Lifestyle changes could prevent 17,000 cases of bowel cancer a year

Eating less red meat, adding fibre to your diet and getting regular exercise could lower your risk of developing bowel cancer by almost 50 per cent. That would mean 17,000 fewer cases a year, says the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). The WCRF recommends that people eat no more than 500g, or just over a pound, of red meat a week and that they avoid any type of processed meat altogether. (more…)

New documentary Planeat warns against eating meat

A new documentary by the author of the highly publicized China study has a simple message: meat is not only bad for the environment, but also bad for you. Cornell professor T Colin Campbell attracted a lot of attention in 2005 when he published research arguing that a western diet high in meat and dairy products can cause diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Now he’s back, with a film that sets out to explain why veganism is the healthiest choice. (more…)

Studies have, however, shown that it may take as long as a year to get back to your original size and that in fact taking it slowly and doing it naturally is healthier for you and your newborn baby.
