Moving beyond depression
- Photo: Stock.Xchng
Depression can sometimes feel like a dark and dreary cloud that’s never going to go away. Sharing your feelings and thoughts with somebody who truly listens and cares can bring huge relief. For milder forms of depression, writing about your feelings can also be highly beneficial ‑ as can sharing, exercise, wholesome food, yoga or meditation. If you feel that whatever you do, nothing is going to help, you should see a professional who can possibly help you with medication, if necessary. (more…)

Foods that affect your mood
- Photo: Kaptain Kobold / Flickr
Ever heard the saying, You are what you eat? Well it seems that that adage may be truer that you think. Food and your state of mind have a strong connection and we tend to forget that our mind is directly linked to our body. If you do not give your body the nutrients it requires, your mind can easily suffer and this will dampen your mood and, in some cases, cause depression. If you keep your body healthy, your mind will follow. (more…)

Turn your lows into highs
- Photo: boskizzi / Flickr
Highs and lows are a fact of life. Unfortunately, we can’t change the fact that everything doesn’t always run smoothly. What we can change is how we choose to react to certain circumstances; our own attitude and ability to handle negative events in our lives may be well make the difference between sinking and swimming when the going gets tough. No one ever said you have to be happy all the time, but there is some value in being able to work through the trials of life and turn your lows into highs. (more…)

Depression is incredibly common. One in four women and one in 10 men will suffer from depression at some point in their lives and it’s been found that 4 per cent of children in the UK are affected by depression, too. Improve your well-being – by getting connected and getting your hands dirty
- Photo: Celeste33 / Flickr
Longer working hours and more demands at home often lead to less time to devote to important things like your own personal well-being. Saint Benedict spoke long ago about living a complete life by routinely structuring things like work, exercise and spirituality and this still applies today. Practicing virtues like generosity and building good relationships can also heighten one’s sense of happiness. As can getting your hands dirty in soil, as recent research shows us. (more…)

Happiness – has age got anything to do with it?
- Photo: Stock.Xchng
Does one experience more or less happiness at different ages or stage of life? When it comes to relationships, for example, the honeymoon stage leads to the parenting stage ‑ having kids isn’t easy and those years of raising children can sometimes lead to a feeling of dissatisfaction in a marriage. When the kids leave home and the tough years of parenting are over, a couple’s relationship often improves. There are highs and lows at all stages and in any relationship. (more…)

Slap, tickle and giggle: The most fun you can have losing weight
- Photo: Stock.Xchng
Yep, we’re telling you to shag yourself silly. And be sure to have a laugh while you’re at it. If you want to lose weight, that is. Kerry McCloskey, author of The Ultimate Sex Diet, claims that sex is one of the best forms of exercise available, and we’re not going to argue. A separate study on laughter found that having a good giggle makes your body respond as though you were exercising. How great is that? (more…)
