If you think small dogs are for celebs’ handbags you’re not alone. Small dogs have a bad reputation – they’re thought to be yappy, nippy and neurotic. There are a few smaller breeds with big personalities though, meaning if you live in a flat and can’t have a big dog you don’t have to settle for carrying a Chihuahua around with you. The beagle, the affenpinscher and the Cavalier King Charles spaniel are three little dogs with loads of character.
The beagle
The beagle is a much loved dog that was bred for hunting. It has loads of spirit and loves being part of a pack, making it a great family pet. Beagles need plenty of attention and exercise, though, and are always ready to play. If a beagle gets bored it’s likely to howl until you give it something to do to keep it busy. So this definitely isn’t a low maintenance breed.
The affenpinscher
Unlike the beagle, the affenpinscher is a bit of a loner. It has a very sweet nature and loves affection, but is more comfortable living in a small family. It’s a scruffy looking dog with permanent bed head, which adds to its personality. Affenpinschers tend to be a quiet breed, though they love playing and are very good with children.

The Cavalier King Charles spaniel needs plenty of love and affection. It’s a gentle, polite dog that’s very easy to train but it becomes very attached to its owner and doesn’t do well if left alone. It also needs to be groomed often to keep its coat in good shape and is prone to some health complications. But if you’re looking for a BFF, this breed is for you.
Be sure your new puppy, whatever breed it is, is healthy by visiting pedigreesearch.co.uk to find a registered breeder near you.
