Puppies may be cute and cuddly, but the first few days can be quite messy if they are not potty trained. Potty training is the art of teaching your dog or puppy where to relieve himself when nature calls and can be the most difficult problem you may encounter with your pet. You will find that your puppy will either use the wrong place at the right time or vice-versa and this can be very frustrating. Here are a few simple tips which may make your life a little bit easier.
It is all in the timing
A dog or puppy will usually want to relieve themselves after activities such as sleeping, feeding, playing or after being confined. It is a good idea to take your pet to your designated potty area after doing any of these. It is also best to feed your dog according to a daily routine and remove his water just before going to bed. This will keep his potty time consistent and will eventually become predictable.
Look for signs
It is also important to supervise your new puppy or dog as much as you can to prevent accidents. Your puppy should not be left to wander alone as this could be dangerous. If you see your dog running around in circles and sniffing, this could mean that he is desperate to relieve himself. Take him to the potty area immediately. It is also a good idea to associate a command to the potty action. This will help your dog understand your instruction.
Remember to be patient with your new dog and to give your pet enough time to adjust to the new home. If your puppy does succeed, a praise or treat will go a long way and may encourage your dog to repeat his behavior. Most importantly, it will establish what you approve of and what is prohibited.
