Before the world went mobile, mums would give kids money to call home in case of emergency. The idea that we would all soon be walking around with tiny telephones in our pockets was unheard of. Things have changed drastically since then. Now children expect to have mobile phones. As a parent, is buying a phone for your child spoiling them or preparing them for possible emergencies?
There is no straight answer
Buying a mobile for your child is a tricky situation because there are so many things to consider. If your child has to walk to school, providing them with a phone may be safer, but if they have trouble concentrating and the television is already an obstacle, then owning a phone may not be the best thing for them.
Talk to your child
If your child starts asking for a mobile phone, ask them why they want one. Ask questions that will get specific answers and listen to them with genuine interest. This may be the only time that the subject may be broached without your child getting defensive.
Do not answer right away. It is important to think your decision through because a mobile may affect your child negatively. If your child has a tendency to lose things of value, misplace items or break things then maybe they need to grow up a bit more. Alternatively, if your child has shown maturity, they may be able to look after a phone.
A phone may also distract your child from what they need to do. Being able to contact their friends at any time may mean that they will neglect their school work. Deciding what is good for your child can be difficult. Be honest with your child and say no if you do not think it is a good idea.
