Many parents dread half-term. Not because they don’t love their children. Not because they don’t want to spend time with their children. But rather because they simply don’t know what to do with their children come holiday time. Children get bored easily, and if you’re not a fan of computer games and hours in front of the box you need to plan ahead for the hols. Our top suggestion? Spend a morning at a family-friendly museum.
London: Geffrye Museum
London’s Geffrye Museum is housed in an old almshouse, packed with 400 years’ worth of history. The period rooms show, according to the museum’s website, ‘the changing style of the English domestic interior in a series of period rooms from 1600 to the present day.’ That doesn’t sound like a whole lot of fun, but the museum does have a children’s programme for half-term that’s sure to keep your kids busy. And, as an added bonus, entrance is free.
Norfolk: Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse
Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse is a 50-acre site on beautiful grounds that aims to bring Norfolk history to life. Highlights include re-enactments of workhouse life, traditional storytelling, dressing up and cart rides around the farm. Visit the museum’s website for more information.
Hull: Hands on History
Hands on History, housed in the old Grammar School William Wilberforce attended, tells the story of Hull and its people. Hands on History includes ‘a fascinating glimpse into Victorian times and also features the Egyptian Gallery. The gallery is home to a genuine 2,600 year old mummy and unique replicas of King Tutankhamen’s treasures.’ The Victorian playroom is a definite winner. Entrance is free.
Allkids.co.uk has compiled a very useful list of child-friendly museums that includes details on special events they have planned for half-term. You’re sure to find plenty of ideas for keeping your little ones busy.
