Breastfeeding is an important part of motherhood. The bond created between a mother and her child during pregnancy, and intensified during childbirth, continues and is strengthened during breastfeeding. Much research has been done on breastfeeding and there is ample, reliable evidence showing that there are enormous health benefits both to the baby and to the mother who breastfeeds consistently for at least six months after childbirth.
What the studies show
Some of the health benefits associated with breastfeeding include prevention of a number of infections, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), cardiovascular diseases and allergies. Breastfed infants also show better neurological development and are less prone to conditions such as multiple sclerosis, tonsillectomy and acute appendicitis.
Mothers also benefit and have a lower risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. They also have less chance of being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and have fewer problems related to hip fractures and bone density.
There are many more studies currently taking place to ascertain further health benefits and advantages of lactation on mother and child.
If you’re unable to breastfeed
If it is too painful or uncomfortable to breastfeed your baby, there are solutions. Warm showers or warm compresses on your breasts will alleviate the pain and discomfort. Massaging your breasts before and after feedings is also effective.
If you cannot produce enough milk for your baby, consult your doctor. He or she may prescribe medication to help. There are also a variety of herbal remedies and teas available to help such as fenugreek and blessed thistle.
Although breastfeeding is natural, it is not always easy. You should not give up; it will get better with practice. If you have any questions or require some advice, you should definitely find a support group close to you, or a lactation specialist. The benefits to your health and that of your baby are far too important for your attempts to be abandoned without serious consideration.
