How many times have you heard that all-too-familiar screaming and crying from a toddler throwing a tantrum? Or walked down the supermarket aisle only to find a child kicking and screaming in front of the chocolate bars? If the child misbehaving belongs to you, then it is time to take control of the situation. Tantrums should be nipped in the bud so that a clear message is sent to your child and it is never repeated.

Stay calm

If your toddler is acting up, make sure that you remain calm at all times. Keep your voice low and even and avoid screaming back at your child. This will only teach them that what you are doing is acceptable. It is also best to keep your statements short and simple. Toddlers do not have a long attention span, especially during a bout of rage and frustration. Repeat statements if you are not being heard and remain in control.

Using time-out as punishment

If your toddler does not want to come to you, fetch them and put them in a corner for one or two minutes. Do not allow them to move away from the area or complete any activity until their time-out is finished. The only way this method can be effective is if you as a parent, are consistent with sending your child to the corner every time they have a tantrum. After their time has been completed, explain why they were put there and have them apologise. If they behave after you have punished them, acknowledge their good behaviour with a compliment.

Tantrums usually occur because your toddler lacks the communication skills to let you know how they feel. Be patient and understanding, but do not allow your child to act this way. Allowing your child to kick and scream will only cause another tantrum as you are conveying that this behaviour will be permitted.
