Brits prefer home cooking to just about everything

A recent study commissioned by Richmond Sausages has found which meals makes Britons long for home – and has demonstrated that British mums are definitely getting it right in the kitchen. Many of the study’s participants prefer their mum’s home cooking to their own cooking, their partners’ efforts in the kitchen, and even the meals they can get in five-star restaurants. Now, the company has launched a competition to find the recipe that Brits love best.

It’s in the numbers

The survey’s results are revealing of the nation’s likes and loves when it comes to food. Around a third of them would like their partners to cook more like mum, while over 40 per cent would rather have something straight from mum’s pots and pans than from a restaurant. These food preferences are definitely sentimental ones: 30 per cent of Brits miss home whenever they smell someone making their favourite meal from home.

The ‘tastes that bring them home’

The studied found out which meals bring Brits home for a visit, and found that the winner would have to be the roast dinner. Next in line is shepherd’s pie, followed by bangers and mash, then sausages, chips, and beans, and finally, the old favourite fry-up.

The competition

The Taste That Brings Them Home competition aims to discover which sausage-based recipe brings Brits home to mum, and has enlisted the help of the mum of celebrity chef James Martin to find it. Sue Martin said that ‘It’s great to see that mum’s home cooked meals are still loved by the nation and it’s really nice to know that our efforts in the kitchen are appreciated!’ She also reminded would-be participants of the £10,000 prize offered to the competition’s winner.
