A quick cup of tea is the easiest thing to make today. Just pop a teabag into a cup and pour boiling water over it. A really good cup of tea requires more effort, though, as you’ll need a teapot and teacup, besides the right quality and quantity of tea. The water you use should be filtered and slightly mineralised. Read on for some tips on how to make a good cuppa and to find out why sipping on a cup of tea is good for you.
Tea-making tips
A porcelain teapot and teacup is essential if you want to make a proper cuppa! If the teapot has its own tea filter, there should be enough space for the tea leaves to ‘breathe’. On that note, tea leaves are the way to go as long as they’re fresh. Buy small quantities of leaves at a time and store your tea in an airtight metal container and keep it in a cool, dry spot.
In terms of quantity, use a teaspoon of tea per cup and then ‘add another for the pot’. This will depend on the tea, though, as some teas require more specific quantities, for example green teas.
The best water for tea is slightly mineralised, meaning it isn’t too hard. If you’re using water from the tap, filter it before you boil it. Once the water is simmering, heat up your teapot and then toss the water. Place the tea inside the pot and let the leaves open a little before you pour in the simmering (not boiling) water.
Don’t let black tea infuse for too long if your teeth stain easily. Alternatively, drink light green teas.
Why tea is good for you
Because tea is rich in antioxidants, various vitamins, trace elements and mineral salts, it can boost your health and vitality. Theanine stimulates alpha waves and since tea contains this amino acid, it can help you to relax. On the other hand, the theine found in tea helps to stimulate the mind. Drink green tea if you’re feeling especially stressed or if you want to improve your concentration.
