French toast makes a wholesome snack at any time of the day. It can be dressed sweet with sugar and cinnamon or it can be served savoury, with tomato sauce. The French have another name for French toast, ‘pain perdu’, which means ‘lost bread’ as it is a great way to make use of old or left over bread. This recipe takes 20 minutes to prepare and 20 minutes to cook but once you’ve got the knack, it will take you no time at all.

Ingredients for French toast

For this recipe, you will need: four slices of loaf bread (or eight slices of French bread), three large eggs at room temperature, half a cup of milk, some butter for frying and whatever topping you prefer.

How to make French toast

Beat the eggs and milk together until they are well combined. Slice your bread and then prick each slice with a fork. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture or pour the egg mixture over the bread. Once the bread is saturated, it is ready to be fried.

Place a saucepan on the stove and warm it up, add some butter and allow it to melt. Fry a couple of slices of French toast at a time and allow each side of the bread to become golden brown in colour and crisp before removing it from the pan.

How to serve French toast

You can eat French toast as it is or add some cinnamon and apple for a sweet taste or tomato sauce if you’d rather go savoury. Cheese also goes well with French toast.

If you have the time and want to make a proper meal of it, serve your French toast in the American style: fry up some bacon until it is crisp and add maple syrup.
