Dietary supplements that contain antioxidants are widely and easily available over the counter. There are hundreds and thousands of different brands advertising the benefits of their little pills. But supplements are just that, supplements. They cannot and should not replace a balanced diet that consists of natural, fresh and preferably organic foods, which is where you will find the best sources of antioxidants.
A berry a day
The best known antioxidants include vitamins C, E as well as beta-carotene. And the best sources of vitamins are fruits and vegetables. Not all fruits or vegetables were created equal and berries come out tops. So a daily intake of fresh raspberries, cranberries, strawberries, blackberries or blueberries will supply your body with the necessary antioxidants it requires to function properly.
These berries also contain high levels of flavonoids that help to prevent the damage caused by free radicals (ageing, for example) and other compounds such as hydrogen peroxide, singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals.
The best way to have berries is as fresh and plain as possible, although adding sugar does not affect their antioxidant properties. But be aware that dairy products will lower the beneficial effects of the vitamins present.
The next best thing
Orange and other citrus fruit are an excellent source of antioxidants. If you would rather have fruit juice, make sure that it is from freshly squeezed fruit – preferably 100 per cent organic fruit.
Other antioxidant power houses
Apart from fruits and vegetables, you will find these free radical fighting machines in whole grains like barley and oats, green tea, coffee and very dark chocolate.
Tip: In the kitchen, one of the best methods to preserve vitamins is to stir-fry your vegetables.
