For people on a weight loss diet, one the biggest challenges is controlling their appetite. Cravings for all things sweet and greasy tend to crop up as soon as we start trying to adopt a healthier, more balanced diet. Curbing the urge to overeat can often be a battle but it is not impossible with the help of some natural appetite suppressants; both supplements and whole foods. Together with regular exercise and a balanced healthy diet, many people are able to reach and maintain their ideal weight with a little help from nature.
Expensive but effective
Supplements that work as excellent appetite suppressants are often very expensive. And unlike whole foods, they do not offer additional nutrition.
Hoodia gordonii is a plant that resembles a cactus, and which comes from the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. It was originally used by the Khoi and San people as an appetite suppressant, especially before long hunting trips. This is one of the more popular suppressants but you should be careful to buy a brand that contains a large enough amount of the authentic hoodia gordonii.
Whey protein powder is another natural suppressant that is good for muscle growth, inexpensive and can be purchased in a range of flavours. There are also many recipes that require whey protein powder as part of their ingredients.
Other natural suppressants contain herbs such as taraxacum officinalis and paulina cupana (guarana).
Right there for the picking
Whole foods are another option for those looking for effective appetite suppressants. Water is quite possibly the best, healthiest and least expensive suppressant of them all. A glass drunk before each meal and whenever cravings occur will do wonders for curbing your appetite.
Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, bok choy and cabbage are also quite low in calories and a good source of fibre. They not only suppress you appetite but they also require more calories to digest than they actually contain!
Organic pickles found in health stores are also a great choice because they contain very few calories and are an excellent snack between meals.
When you feel the urge to bite into a slab of chocolate, turn to an apple instead. This low calorific suppressant also contains plenty of fibre. And if you must have chocolate, opt for a quality slab with a high content of cocoa. You’ll likely find just a few bites will satisfy you.
A few more hints
Any herbal remedies should be purchased from companies that use the Full Spectrum method: it ensures that the ingredients are fresh, potent and safe and in the correct therapeutic dosages.
You can choose to take supplements, whole foods, or a combination of the two. You need to decide which works best for you. Whatever you decide, be sure to consult your GP or dietician and discuss any potential side-effects that may occur, especially when taking supplements like hoodia and guarana.
