Yoga is a discipline that originated in India about 5,000 years ago. This ancient tradition is not only associated with Hinduism but also with Buddhism and Jainism. Whether your goal is to simply improve your health or to achieve Moksha, a concept similar to Nirvana or the release of the soul, yoga is a great addition to your exercise routine. It has tremendous physiological, psychological as well as biochemical benefits. All you need is loose, comfortable clothing and a soft mat to practice on.

Flexibility, strength and balance

Most yoga classes will teach you asanas, which are a series of physical poses. Others will also include some breathing techniques as well as meditation techniques. You will not have to stretch like a pretzel from the first class. Classes and poses are designed to increase your flexibility gradually, no matter what your age is.

You’ll not only learn to stretch your muscles but all the soft tissues in your body such as ligaments, fascia sheath and tendons.

Ashtanga and power yoga are two of the more vigorous forms of yoga which will improve your muscle tone.

Thanks to improved flexibility and more toned muscles, you’ll also benefit from better posture. Your core strength will have improved tremendously.

The breathing techniques you’ll learn will also increase your lung capacity and circulation. You’ll lower your stress levels and feel more relaxed for longer periods of time.

Try it for yourself

There are other less ‘visible’ benefits to yoga such as increased mental alertness, concentration and improved memory, according to practitioners.

If you have no particular conditions and your doctor approves, go ahead, and sign up for a class close to you. It’s a great way to spend your lunch hour!
