When was the last time you got your eyes checked? Eyes not only need to be shielded from the sun’s harmful UV rays with sunglasses but they need to be checked regularly, too. There are also many things you can do to avoid the deterioration of your eyes – certain foods and lifestyle choices can help to prevent cataracts and keep your eyes bright and healthy. Even people who wear glasses and contacts should see an optometrist on a regular basis.
Looking after your eyes
In the same way that you would go for you annual check-up you also need to get your eyes checked at least once a year. You want to pick up eye problems early before they develop further and if you wear contacts or glasses you may need to change the strength.
Exercise is also extremely important for the eyes. By exercising you increase the oxygen and nutrient flow going to your body and eyes. At the same time, sweating also helps to remove waste products from the skin and eyes. Drinking smoothies that contain lots of antioxidants and nutrients can also improve eye health. Another reason to stop smoking is that if you quit you’ll decrease your chance of developing cataracts.
Foods for healthy eyes
Spinach, peppers and blueberries are all great for your eyes because they are high in vitamins C and E. The antioxidants found in these foods also help to protect your eyes from free radicals found in the environment that can cause disease. The sulphur content in garlic, asparagus and onion helps to prevent cataracts while beans and broccoli help to protect your eyes against the damaging effect of blue light because of their high level of lutein. Trans-fatty acids and sugary foods like cake should be avoided as a fatty diet leads to restricted blood flow to the eyes and can increase your risk of muscular degeneration.
So, stop smoking, get down to the gym, and eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. You’ll be doing yourself, and your eyesight, a real favour.
