Breast cancer kills 12,000 women a year, and while doctors can’t predict who will get it, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk. October is breast cancer awareness month, and there’s no better time than now to start examining your lifestyle and making changes wherever needed for the sake of your health. We take a look at the latest research.

Stop smoking – now

It’s only recently that a link between smoking and breast cancer was found. Research suggests that nicotine may promote the development of breast cancer, so stop smoking now if you’re concerned about breast cancer.

Beware of the Pill

There seems to be a link between using the contraceptive Pill for a long period of time and developing breast cancer. It’s advised you stop using the Pill after the age of 30, to help reduce your risk.

Think carefully before choosing HRT

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women going through menopause increases the risk of developing breast cancer. The longer HRT is used, the bigger your risk. HRT also makes breast tissue denser, making it harder to pick up cancer on a mammogram. If your doctor suggests HRT for you, discuss the cancer risk posed by this treatment before going ahead with it.

Breastfeed

Breastfeeding isn’t for everyone, but one study of women in 30 countries showed that the longer you breastfeed, the greater the protection you have against developing breast cancer. It’s thought that breastfeeding makes breast cells resistant to cancerous changes.

Drink less

Just one big glass of wine a day increases risk for breast cancer by 12 per cent. The less you drink, the lower your risk is. Cancer Research UK recommends women drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week – a unit is the equivalent of a small glass of wine, half a pint, or one small measure of spirits.
