Do you struggle to wake up in the morning, or suffer from afternoon energy lows? You’re not alone. Fatigue is one of the most common medical complaints, but also one of the hardest to treat. While nothing beats a healthy diet, regular exercise and plenty of sleep for combating fatigue, there are natural energy boosters out there you can try if you need an extra pick-me-up to get you through the day.

Bee pollen

Bee pollen contains 22 amino acids, 18 enzymes, 27 minerals, plant hormones, and at least 16 vitamins. So it’s no surprise that it’s mentioned in the Bible, the Talmud and the Koran as a key to maintaining youth. Ancient Greek athletes used bee pollen to increase their strength and vitality, and more recently it’s been found that the substance also has anti-cancer properties.

Royal jelly

Royal jelly is made when bees combine honey and pollen. It’s packed with B vitamins, as well as many other vitamins and minerals. It also has 18 amino acids, enzymes and antibiotic properties. Besides being good for asthma, liver disease and bone fractures, royal jelly is also an excellent energy booster.

Spirulina

Spirulina is a single-celled algae discovered by the Aztecs, who made it a staple of their diet. It’s high in protein, full of vitamin B12, and also contains many vitamins and minerals. Spirulina is a great supplement to take if your diet is lacking, or if you suffer from fatigue.

Gotu Kola

Gotu Kola is a herb that contains healing phytochemicals and is often used by herbalists to help people deal with fatigue. It is also good for treating depression, and unlike a cup of coffee from your coffee machine, it won’t keep you up all night. Instead, it actually helps improve sleep.

Cayenne

Cayenne pepper ups energy levels because it improves circulation. It’s also helpful for colds, sinus and sore throats, and is a promising anti-inflammatory.
