Even those of us who do our best to eat well often end up dehydrated because we underestimate how much water the body really needs. Added to this, the caffeine in tea, coffee and colas acts as a diuretic, meaning when we drink anything caffeinated we need to take in more water than usual. Being dehydrated can affect energy levels, lead to high blood pressure, and interfere with good digestion. Here’s why you should stay hydrated, and some tips on how to.
Water matters
Without enough water, the body’s enzymes, including those that are responsible for producing energy, slow down. This leads to fatigue, and even taking in a little less water than your body needs can lower your metabolism and interfere with your ability to exercise. When it comes to digestion, the body produces around 7 litres of digestive fluid a day, and when we don’t take in enough liquid, we can’t produce as much of it as we need to for optimum digestion. Being dehydrated affects blood pressure, too. Without enough water, blood is thicker, and the body has to work harder to push it through the veins.
Start the day off right
Start every day with a glass of water. Drink it before you have tea, coffee or juice. This glass of water will help replace fluids lost overnight, and is the best way to ensure you will stay hydrated all day long.

Fruit and vegetables are packed with water, plus the minerals that help your body store and use it. Processed foods like crisps, processed meats and sugary snacks all dehydrate the body, while fresh fruit and veg help keep you hydrated and provide you with much needed antioxidants. Try eating at least one serving of fruit and vegetables with every meal.
Say no to soda
The sugar and caffeine in soft drinks are dehydrating. When possible, opt for fruit juice or water instead. If you feel like drinking something with a little fizz, try sparkling water. Vegetable juice (if it’s low in sodium) is also a great option for staying hydrated.
Finally, carry a water bottle around with you wherever you go. It’s hard not to stay hydrated when you sip on water throughout the day.
