Get more fibre with every meal

You may know that fibre is a very important part of your diet, but what does it really do for you? Besides helping to keep you regular, fibre also lowers cholesterol, lowers your risk of developing colon cancer, and can also help you to lose weight by making you feel fuller. So, getting more fibre from your diet is definitely a good idea, but where do you start? Here are some painless tips for adding more fibre to every meal.

The breakfast of champions

Ignore advertising from popular cereals that claim to be high in fibre. While fibre will have been added to them, you’re also likely to be getting salt and sugar your body doesn’t need with every spoonful. Opt for oats (preferably rolled), which have amazing health benefits. For even more fibre, add some grated apple or banana to your oats, and if you must sweeten them, do it naturally, with a little honey or xylitol, available from any health shop.

Out to lunch

Always try to choose foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. A general rule is that anything white is out. White flour, for example, is white because it has been processed and bleached – and processing takes out all of the nutrients and fibre you need in your diet. If you often eat out for lunch, taking a break from the office, rather choose wholewheat or rye if you’re eating sandwiches, and aim for a soup based on legumes like beans and lentils. The best fast food for more fibre? Mexican. Go for nachos and beans, and avoid fajitas made from refined flour.

The easiest way to add more fibre to any supper is to always eat a salad – either as a side dish or starter. If you’re having pasta (wholewheat is better), put carrots and onions and peppers in your tomato sauce, then blend, for a veggie-packed meal even the children will love. If you’re having a fry-up, always add some baked beans, and consider replacing starchy side dishes you normally have with steamed vegetables.

The trick to getting more fibre in your diet is eating whole foods. Think fresh fruit and vegetables, beans and lentils, and oats, and you’ll be well on your way to a healthier (and quite possibly slimmer) body.
