Nutritionists like Patrick Holford have long been touting the benefits of vitamins for combating a range of diseases, and science is now starting to back up these claims. Cancer treatment, and prevention, starts with a healthy diet, preferably made up of organic produce. Many nutrition specialists recommend taking a daily multivitamin, and here are the top vitamins you should be looking out for in your diet, and in your supplement.

Beta carotene

Beta carotene is the precursor of Vitamin A, a powerful antioxidant the body can’t produce on its own. As one of the top vitamins for overall health, it has been found by studies to protect the lungs against free radicals and toxins associated with lung cancer. Another study shows that ex-smokers with a daily intake of green and yellow veggies (high in beta carotene) decrease their risk of stomach and lung cancer. Beta carotene should not be taken on its own though, particularly by smokers. Rather make sure it is included in your multivitamin or an antioxidant formula.

Vitamin C

Of all the top vitamins for staying healthy, vitamin C may well be the best. It is one of the most well researched vitamins, and shows great promise in the fight against cancer. In a study, patients with cancer of the breast, cervix, ovary or uterus were given large doses of vitamin C, and had a length of life 13-21 times longer than a control group that didn’t receive therapy. For best results, take buffered vitamin C, with bioflavonoids.

Folic acid

Folic acid (also known as folate) has been shown to help protect against cervical cancer. It’s necessary for the body’s production of its genetic material, like DNA. You can find it in citrus fruit, most types of fish, and cabbage and dark, leafy vegetables.

There are many more vitamins that have been shown to have anti-cancer properties, as well as a range of other health benefits. Take Patrick Holford’s 100% Healthy quiz to find out just how healthy you really are, and where you can make changes in your diet and lifestyle for a longer, disease free life.
