In an age of ever advancing technology it seems that it is becoming increasingly difficult to get your children to spend time outdoors. Games played outside, building tree-houses or simply using the power of imagination and creativity seem to be a thing of the past. These days it appears that playing on computers and game consoles seems to have become more entertaining than playing outside, learning about the natural world and soaking up some healthy vitamin D.

Make it special

Get the whole family to join in with outdoor games. It is an amazing way to strengthen family bonds, it will give the family memories to cherish for years to come and it could inspire a family tradition for your children to pass on to future generations. Kids are also more likely to want to spend time outdoors if they see how much fun the rest of the family is having.

If you don’t have access to your own private garden then you can always have an outing and take the family to the zoo or to a park where everyone can spend a day away from the distractions of television or computers and get chance to spend time with one another. Traditional outdoor games and activities would include hide-and-seek, ball games, flying kites and tag, but don’t be afraid to use your imagination and come up with your own unique games. It’s also a good idea to incorporate outdoor toys where you can, allowing your kids to be able to play on their own, with the family or with friends.

Naturally, as with most things in life, there are certain precautions to keep in mind. Kids Health mentions the importance of caring for your child in the sun. Sunscreen will help block harmful UV rays from burning your child’s skin and will allow your child more freedom in the sun.

Long-term benefits

Kids who spend quality time with their families are given the chance to develop social skills with real people, as opposed to people met in virtual realities and games, and are taught to spend relaxed time away from technology. Time spent as a family when your children are young will have an impact on their teen and adolescent years as they will have stronger family bonds to rely on.
