Why playing outside is important for kids

Children who’ve been raised with the options of TV and console games to keep them occupied often won’t be especially eager to get outside and play in the garden, but the good news is that you’ll be surprised how quickly they warm to the idea. It’s worth the effort of encouraging them: find out why playing outside is so important for a child’s development, then provide them with some good outdoor toys and let them get to it.

It’s hugely important for children to get fresh air into their lungs, so whether it’s in the garden or at a park, get them out there. Playing outdoors also means that kids will probably engage in the more physical kinds of play that allow their lungs to take in lots of oxygen.

Exercise

Before kids get old enough to dread exercise, let them play games that keep their muscles strong, get them breathing deeply, allow the release of endorphins, and keep their metabolism healthy. They won’t know that they’re exercising, and you’re setting them up for good habits later in life – when getting outdoors and being active is just a part of your daily routine, you’re far more likely to enjoy it than when you’re setting time aside to force yourself to work out.

Creativity

Playing outside allows children time for unsupervised play that will let them make up their own games. If they complain at first that there’s ‘nothing to do’ outside, you don’t have to provide them with a solution – they’ll soon find ways to keep themselves occupied, whether they’re interacting with their friends or exploring the garden on their own. They’ll develop problem-solving skills and learn more about social interaction. Once you’ve got things started, you’ll be surprised how eager your kids are to play outside as often as they can – providing a break for you, and all kinds of benefits for them.
